The architectural firm Pirinen & Salo has built a small studio for a film director on the shore of Lake Porovesi in Finland.

A tiny house in the middle of the forest is a secluded place for a Finnish film director to work. The authors of the project — architects Pirinen & Salo — tried to make its appearance mysterious and even a little fabulous. Therefore, they were inspired by adventure films of the 1980s with «mystical worlds».

The studio is located on a gentle slope next to the ruined foundation of an old stone building. A wooden path leads to the house from the shoreline, and the structure itself, including the facade and roof, is covered with tiles.

To give the “shrine of cinema” mystery, the architects made the age of the house and its shape difficult to understand and determine. They used a game of scale: in a deliberately small building they made a huge gable roof and an arched window. “All the technical devices that can give out the real age of the hut are carefully hidden so that the building looks ageless”» the authors say.

A black wooden staircase leads from the stone foundation into the cabin, directly into the workspace — a room lined with dark oak panels. On both sides there are built-in desks and cabinets made of contrasting light oak. There are also bookshelves, an audio system, a leather sofa and a black cast iron stove.

In the language of church architecture, the center of the building is described as a «nave”, its tables are «side aisles”, and posters of favorite films are, of course, “shrines».

In the back of the studio there is a bathroom and a technical room, and on the mezzanine there is a hidden place “for catching ideas and dreams.» Here, a fascinating view of the forest and lake opens from the porthole.
