Lake Cottage in Canada

The customers of this project are sailing enthusiasts, that’s why they called their house «A boat in the trees».

The customers bought a plot on Lake De Montagne to engage in their favorite sailing. But it was not easy to build a house here: part of the territory is located outside the flood line, which must remain untouched in accordance with the rules of urban planning.

The customers and architects of Paul Bernier Architecte saw this as an interesting task and designed a building whose shape was formed by this line.

The cottage turned out to be small, but perfectly optimized for the needs of customers and the features of the site. It looks like a wooden box topped with a white roof and an ellipse resembling an observation tower on a ship. The bow of this «vessel» is supported by steel columns, and lattice panels protect the space from prying eyes.

The owners call their house a «Boat in the trees” because from the side of the road the building really resembles it. Glass sliding partitions with a view of the beach and lake enhance the feeling. In good weather, the owners open them completely, allowing the wind to wave the curtains like a sail.

A large white roof protects the lower level from overheating, and also forms a small terrace that can be accessed from the master bedroom. By the way, the entire roof surface is covered with grass, which is nice to walk barefoot in the early morning. There is also a veranda below, hidden from the sun and rain, where the family likes to gather in the evenings by the fireplace.
