Forest bungalows in the suburbs of Nanjing

Chinese architects from Monoarchi Studio have built several minimalist houses with panoramic views of the forest thicket and monochrome wooden interiors.

Residents of the Chinese city of Nanjing have another opportunity to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle and have a quiet time in nature. A new Spring Huts hotel has opened on Tangshan Mountain, an hour’s drive from Nanjing, where guests can stay in one of the secluded bungalows surrounded by trees and mountain boulders. Laconic houses with panoramic windows were built by architects from the studio Monoarchi.

The authors carefully studied the geographical and geological features of the site and selected four points with an optimal overview; the bungalows were located on them. The source of inspiration was the adaptive nature of ivy, which wraps around trees in the forest: so, the location of boulders and trees determined the place of construction and the unique layout of each house. The cruciform structure of buildings and their organic shape help them to carefully bend around all natural «obstacles».

The architects tried to cause minimal damage to nature: all buildings are installed on piles, and you can move between them on wooden floors and paths. Following the same logic, the authors did not contrast the bungalows with their surroundings. They rounded the corners of the buildings both outside and inside, and the facades were lined with natural wood. Two smaller houses are lined with burnt wood and «hidden” in the thick of the forest, the other two are located on stones and are distinguished by decorative facades of cedar tiles.

The interior of the bungalow also seems logical, emphasizing unity with nature: the floor, ceilings and walls here are covered with honey-colored wood. The authors also gave organic outlines to the pieces of furniture and used soft textiles so as not to distract attention from the views. In each room they are different: from one window you can admire the panorama of the mountain slope, from the other — the pattern of lichen on a boulder or the ligature of young foliage. A great addition to the peaceful interiors are small pools filled with water from hot springs.
