Architects Studio Schicketanz designed this house, inspired by the beautiful landscape of the coast of Big Sur. The customers — a family with two daughters — wanted to use it for a weekend break, but the pandemic adjusted the plans, and the house turned into a shelter where you can comfortably wait out an alarming situation.

Instead of quarantining the apartment, the family got the opportunity to relax by the pool with an ocean view, and the children enjoyed their new playroom. The house has everything you need for life: a large kitchen, a study, several bedrooms and a patio with a fireplace.

But the main decoration of the project is the ocean views that open from most rooms. The architects made all the glass partitions sliding so that the owners could let a fresh breeze into the house at any time.

The bureau chose local materials for construction and decoration: for example, granite was mined in Hollister, near Big Sur. In addition, the entire ”shell» of the house is made in earthy and neutral tones so as not to stand out on the coast. Moreover, the house stands at a distance from all settlements, alone with nature.

To make the building autonomous, Studio Schicketanz architects installed Tesla Power Walls solar panels. There is enough electricity to supply the house, as well as charging two electric vehicles.
