Reconstruction of a village house in Spain Architecture 20.02.2022 Rustic stone house with a laconic interior and a cozy patio designed by the Spanish studio Hanghar. MWA Hart Nibbrig Architects from the Hanghar studio have transformed an old stone house located in the small village of La Rioja in northern Spain. They complemented the traditional building with a minimalist interior, and a small barnyard next to it was turned into a cozy patio with a rounded concrete platform. Photo: Max Hart Nibbrig Realizing the beauty of the ancient architecture of the house and the expressive stone walls, the authors preserved most of the authentic elements, and minimized the necessary interventions. So, they embroidered the existing windows, letting light into the building: the rays of the sun emphasize the expressive textures used by the architects in the interior. Concrete built-in benches and shelves complement the austere interiors of the house, which serve as a suitable backdrop for old beams, stone niches and other original architectural elements. The real decoration of the kitchen is an old stone drinking trough for cattle: the authors of the project turned it into a free-standing sink mounted on a sculptural concrete base. The architects beat its inconvenient rectangular layout with a streamlined concrete slab that neatly “bypasses” bushes and flowers growing in the garden. The organic silhouette of the structure is emphasized by a woolen carpet-cloud, and light chaise lounges, street lamps and planters with plants create an atmosphere of comfort.
