The Valley of Silence, located on the old road between Oaxaca and Yervé el Agua, is famous for its archaeological heritage inherited from the Zapotecs and Mixtecs. Here, surrounded by red stones, agave and low hills, Casa Silencio (“House of Silence”) is located — an amazing small Mezcal distillery with its own boutique hotel with six designer suites. A place for meditation, relaxation and immersion in the special ancient culture of the region.

Casa Silencio (”House of Silence») literally grows out of the ground, becoming a continuation of the landscape thanks to the traditional technology of adobe construction. This technique connects the house not only with the surroundings, but also with the history of the place: this is how it was built here in the ancient pre-Hispanic period. The building, as well as the drink created here, have become a kind of interpretation of the cultural heritage of the ancestors, a «modern temple of an ancient tradition» imbued with mysticism.

Casa Silencio is conceived as a place where different eras and dimensions converge. Here the linearity of time is violated: the past, present and future meet in the same space. 

The building has a complex architecture — the interior spaces alternate with semi-open courtyards, and the plan turns into an intricate ornament. Internal voids play no less a role than the building itself — it is thanks to them that the building is in constant dialogue with the outside world, nature and landscape.

Casa Silencio interior design, created by Martin d’Acosta, too, celebrates the beauty and values of traditional materials and crafts: the whole setting is created by hand by masters of the region who work with stone, leather, brass, wood, textiles, carpets, ceramics, etc.

The building and production are completely eco-friendly and independent: the walls are built from earth that was removed to create foundations, the ceilings are made of local wood, and it is powered by solar energy.
