The architects placed the greenhouse right on the roof of the agricultural market to create a large-scale food production center.

Agrotopia is located in the city of Roeselare and has become Europe’s largest center for food production and education of residents in the field of agriculture.

The greenhouse with an area of 9500 m2 was built right on the roof of the REO Veiling market. The architects META Architectuurbureau and Van Bergen Kolpa Architecten designed it together with the Research Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture Inagro.

The facility is divided into four climatic zones in which different vegetables and fruits can be grown. In addition, the building has a two-story winter garden designed for vertical cultivation, research centers and an educational trail for the public.

At the foot of the greenhouse there are silos for storing rainwater, which is subsequently used to irrigate the greenhouse, and the space is heated by the residual heat of a nearby incinerator.
