The Snøhetta Bureau has expanded the Ordrupgaard Museum in the suburbs of Copenhagen

The architects of the Snøhetta bureau built a structure on the territory of the Ordrupgaard Museum, which combined a neoclassical mansion and a 2005 extension designed by Zaha Hadid.

The Ordrupgaard Art Museum houses the most complete collection of French and Danish art of the XIX‒XX centuries in Northern Europe. Initially, the works were presented only in the mansion of the First World War, but in 2005 Zaha Hadid expanded the museum with a modern extension made of glass and black concrete.

In order to link together two buildings of different styles, Snøhetta architects designed another addition. It creates a holistic and continuous route through the entire museum, and also unites the surrounding park and gardens. In total, the project includes five underground exhibition spaces and several new landscape zones.

The largest of the three main exhibition spaces is partially pulled out of the ground in the form of a monolithic steel sculpture. It resembles a treasure accidentally found during excavations, which glitters in the sun and creates a beautiful play of shadows. It is no coincidence that this hall will house the works of Impressionists known for their skillful work with light: Manet, Monet, Degas and Renoir.

The aboveground part of the structure is cut in the middle, forming a rift that intuitively leads visitors to the main entrance to the Zaha Hadid building. In addition, the structure fits seamlessly into the landscape and is a place where people can sit and relax, enjoying the views of the lush park with century-old trees.

Despite the fact that the extensions look quite modern, the interior spaces are decorated with respect for the original museum halls. The walls and floor are finished with oak, and the ceilings are oak veneer, which creates a warm and intimate atmosphere.
