Eleftheria Square in Nicosia designed by Zaha Hadid Architects Architecture 13.02.2022 The bureau of Zaha Hadid Architects reconstructed Eleftheria Square and the adjacent territory to unite the historical center of the city and its modern quarters. These powerful structures are certainly a landmark of the city, but they also created a clear boundary of division into districts. They turned the drained moat into a park that surrounds the city — previously inaccessible areas were opened to the public, making gardens and walking alleys there. Previously, the view of them was blocked by lush vegetation, but now they are brought to the fore. It will allow the trees planted in the new park to naturally balance the water table and reduce the erosion of the foundations of medieval walls. In addition, they are complemented by small architectural forms designed by the bureau, which make the space convenient for all residents of the city.
