Eleftheria Square in Nicosia designed by Zaha Hadid Architects

The bureau of Zaha Hadid Architects reconstructed Eleftheria Square and the adjacent territory to unite the historical center of the city and its modern quarters.

Eleftheria Square is located near the center of Nicosia and is closely adjacent to the Venetian walls, fortifications of the XVI century, and also borders on the drained fortress moat. These powerful structures are certainly a landmark of the city, but they also created a clear boundary of division into districts.

In order to connect the historical center with the neighborhoods outside the ancient walls, the architects reconstructed the square and the adjacent territory. They turned the drained moat into a park that surrounds the city — previously inaccessible areas were opened to the public, making gardens and walking alleys there.

The space turned out to be two-level — a wide winding pedestrian bridge passes over the moat, from which you can also enjoy the view of the historical walls. Previously, the view of them was blocked by lush vegetation, but now they are brought to the fore.

The architects paved the moat with granite, but left the seams between the slabs open to create a passive rainwater drainage system. It will allow the trees planted in the new park to naturally balance the water table and reduce the erosion of the foundations of medieval walls.

The upper level of the new square and the supporting columns are made of concrete, their sculptural forms ensure structural integrity in this seismic region, and the base of each column also serves as a bench. In addition, they are complemented by small architectural forms designed by the bureau, which make the space convenient for all residents of the city.
