Wood and cork winery in Portugal

In the Dao region in the north-central part of Portugal, a new Taboadella winery has appeared, with a farm, a 40-hectare vineyard and an impressive building designed by Carlos Castaneira.

The history of Taboadella goes back to the I century AD — even then wine was produced here. One of the valuable exhibits of the winery is a monolithic grape press made of a huge stone block found nearby. Recently, the vineyards, conveniently located between the valleys of Vale do Pereiro and Vale do Sequeiro and surrounded by forest, passed into the hands of entrepreneur Louise Amorim. She belongs to the fourth generation of the Amorim family, which has occupied an important place in the Portuguese wine business for 150 years.

Amorim commissioned Portuguese architect Carlos Castaneira, known for his ecological approach, to build a new winery. Located on a slope, the building turned out to be light and elegant thanks to V-shaped and X-shaped supports and a broken roof line. The asymmetrical silhouette of the building resembles the smooth outlines of low hills characteristic of the area — so that the winery fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape.

Castaneira tried to use the maximum of materials of natural origin: roofs, doors, window frames and built-in structures he made of natural wood. The facade of the building was faced by the author with square tiles made of cork: this is a tribute to the history of the Amorim family, which began its journey in the wine business with a cork manufactory. The scaly walls of the winery have a pleasant gray-brown color and echo the color of the traditional stone buildings for the region. In addition to technical rooms, the winery has a tasting room with a spacious balcony covered with a zigzag roof. Laconic wooden architecture is complemented by wicker outdoor furniture, massive tables and artisanal ceramic lamps.

On the territory of the winery there is also a small showroom — a rustic farmhouse, the interior of which was updated by architect Ana Vale. Here you can buy not only wine and delicacies, but also items made by local craftsmen: expressive ceramics of Maria do Amparo, works by sculptor Sergiu Amarala and cobertor de papa — handmade wool blankets using rare technology. The owner of the winery plans to open a guest villa where tourists can spend the night in the historical interiors of an old manor house.
