Prison with a view of the fjord in Greenland Architecture 06.06.2022 A maximum security prison in Greenland looks like an art center or gallery, and those serving their sentences there have a view of a picturesque fjord. Ekaterina Karpukhina EmailPinterestVKonkakte EmailPinterestVKonkakte The Danish studios Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Friis & Moltke worked on an unusual project — a high-security prison where convicted of serious crimes will serve their sentences. They designed the complex in the form of a small village, which includes several buildings with a total area of 8000 m2. Anstalten accommodates cells for 76 prisoners, places for work and study, sports facilities, a library, a medical center and a chapel. The humane concept of the prison allows you to simulate the rhythm of ordinary everyday life. Forty cameras are “closed”, and another thirty-six are “open”. According to Greenland’s prison system, “open” prisoners can continue to communicate with their communities, visit family and work. The prison is located between the foot of the mountain and the fjord and was designed in such a way as to blend seamlessly with the environment. This determined the choice of materials: blocks lined with wear-resistant Corten steel rise on concrete podiums and repeat the contour and differences of the site. Each residential block is divided into several rooms with an area of 12 m2 — there are no bars on the windows, they offer a view of the sea and a concrete wall. In addition, the interior is decorated with works by Greenlandic artists. Photo: Adam Mørk Original content from the site
