Unusual tea pavilion in Tokyo

An unusual tea pavilion has appeared in Tokyo, built specifically for the opening of the Olympics.

Architect Terunobu Fujimori installed a pavilion with a tea room in front of the Tokyo National Stadium. Keeping true to his playful style, the Japanese architect designed it in the shape of a pyramid, and covered the facade with grass and charred cedar wood.

The traditional tea ceremony implies a rather intimate pastime with family and friends, so tea houses are created so that they have the opportunity to retire. On the ground floor of the pavilion, the authors have placed a waiting area, and a small tea room designed for three people — on the upper level, with a view of the stadium.

Students of Kogakuin University of Architecture took part in the project. They plastered the ceiling and treated the wood using a special technology “cedar languor” — a tricky process that allows using fire not only to show the texture of wood, but also to protect against fire, rot, and insects.
